You can always improvise or combine different recipes to find what suits your baby.
Along with the 5 Best Diaper Rash Cream recipes, we have also shared some important insights to help you effectively tackle the diaper rash problem.
Zinc Oxide & Bentonite Clay Diaper Rash Cream
First in the list of my 5 Best Diaper Rash Cream recipe is the Zinc oxide and bentonite clay recipe.
This formula is close to the drugstore brands rash creams, as it has one of the key ingredients Zinc Oxide. It is very effective in curing chronic diaper rashes and the natural ingredients like coconut oil and cod liver oil help keep the skin healthy and infection free.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Shea Butter
- ¼ cup Beeswax
- 4 tbsp. Coconut Oil
- 2 tbsp. Fermented Cod Liver Oil
- 4 tbsp. Zinc Oxide
- 4 tbsp. Bentonite Clay
- 5 drops of Essential Oils like: Lavender, Chamomile, Almond, or Tea Tree Oil
Making Instructions:
- If you have a microwave, take the Shea butter and beeswax in a microwave safe container and heat for 20 seconds at a time until it completely melts. Then add the coconut oil to this melted mixture as coconut oil will melt instantly even with slight heat. Mix the ingredients well to make a homogenized liquid. Make sure the Shea butter and beeswax are broken into smaller pieces, as it will help in melting it faster. If you don’t have a microwave you can melt the ingredients with the help of a double boiler on your stove or cooktop. Just take all 3 ingredients in a glass bowl and place it in a saucepan filled with at least an inch of water. The heated water will melt the mixture.
- Now add the Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Zinc Oxide, Bentonite Clay and Essential Oil to the melted mixture.
- Stir carefully as the solution will be hot. I recommend using a popsicle stick or disposable straw to stir so it can be discarded, as it is difficult to remove the beeswax off the spoons.
- Pour the mixture into an airtight container and stir a few more times as it cools.
- Once cool, it will harden again into the consistency of a lip balm. You can also store it in the refrigerator to harden it faster.
- Apply the balm to the affected area to cure and prevent diaper rash.
- The mixture is also highly moisturizing and will protect the skin effectively.
- Store in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.
How to Use:
- Clean your baby’s bottom with warm water and dab it dry.
- Apply small quantity of the balm to your fingers and massage the same gently onto the affected area.
- Repeat this at least 1-2 times in a day during diaper change.

Diaper Rash Stick
Again another absolutely natural and easy to apply recipe from my 5 Best Diaper Rash Cream Recipe is the diaper rash stick.
This diaper rash cream recipe requires an old empty deodorant stick container which will come in handy when applying the product. It is less messy and easy to use.
You can also use old chap sticks, lipsticks or lip balm containers instead if you don’t have a deodorant container. But if you are using smaller containers like lipsticks or chap sticks reduce the ingredient quantities accordingly.
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp. grated Beeswax
- 1 tbsp. Shea Butter
- 2 tbsp. Coconut Oil
- 1 tbsp. Jojoba Oil
- Essential oils (10 drops of Lavender Oil and/or 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil)*
Making Instructions:
- Use a medium-sized pot halfway filled with water and let it boil.
- Place the grated beeswax into a clean mason jar.
- Place the jar in the boiling water.
- Once the beeswax starts melting add Shea butter, Jojoba oil and Coconut oil and mix well.
- Allow the mixture to melt completely.
- Turn the heat off and add the essential oils (read the note below).
- Pour the melted liquid from the jar into an old deodorant stick container.
- Allow it to cool. You can refrigerate to cool it down quickly.
Note: If your baby is less than 6 months old, I recommend using only 10 drop of Lavender oil. If your baby is more than 6 months old, you can use 10 drops of both Tea Tree oil and Lavender oil. Lavender oil is considered the safest for an infant, but Tea Tree oil helps kill bacteria that might cause a rash.
How to Use:
- Clean your baby’s bottom thoroughly and dab dry
- Directly use the stick on your baby’s bottom to spread the cream evenly
- You can use this stick on the go especially when you are out with the kid
- Again since this is a all natural recipe you can use as much as 4-5 times a day during diaper change.

List of Ingredients used in 5 Best Diaper Rash Cream recipe & Importance
Shea Butter
It is a key ingredient in many homemade beauty and skin care products. It is the basic ingredient in most homemade diaper rash creams because it contains high concentrations of Vitamins A and E. It is gentle and soothing on the skin and has an SPF of about 6 naturally. It also helps to protect the skin from drying as it contains five essential fatty acids. Hence, it is a great natural moisturizer. It has the ability to heal diaper rash, skin rashes, minor wounds, and eczema.
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
I use coconut oil for everything, but it is especially helpful in diaper rash creams as it is naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal. It is quite effective on many types of diaper rashes if used alone, but is more effective when combined with other ingredients. It gently repairs and softens the skin and is a great moisturizer.
Beeswax
It provides a protective barrier for the skin and helps the other ingredients to adhere to the skin so they can be effective. It is a natural protectant that helps in healing wounds and soothing itchy and dry skin.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil Liquid
It is a miracle ingredient that helps heal diaper rashes. Fermented Cod liver oil is present in many renowned diaper rash creams available in the market. It is even recommended by the Weston A. Price Foundation, as it is rich in fat soluble vitamins, so your baby’s skin will absorb only what is required. This ingredient is optional but helpful. Also note that the oil can go rancid, so don’t store the cream for more than 3 months.
Zinc Oxide Powder
This is one of the most potent ingredients for healing diaper rash and is present in leading brands like Desitin and Balmex. Zinc oxide forms a protective layer on the skin as it is insoluble in water. When mixed with the other ingredients, it seals the skin to avoid wetness without drying it out. If you rub a small amount of this cream on your arm, you’ll notice that water beads on top of your skin and won’t absorb. It is effective in healing wounds as well, as it has anti-inflammatory properties.
Bentonite Clay
Helps control moisture and fights bacteria on the skin that can make the rash worse.
Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot is commonly used in moisturizers as a thickening agent and it also helps the active ingredients to penetrate into the skin. It enhances the texture of the cream by making it silky smooth and spreadable. It also softens the skin by enabling it to absorb moisture.
Vitamin E Capsule
Vitamin E capsules act as a preservative. It contains natural antioxidants which extend the life of oil-based products. Just a few drops do the trick.
Almond Oil
It reduces skin irritation and helps support the healing process.
Lavender Essential Oil
Not only does the Lavender oil add a nice fragrance to the cream, but it also heals the skin as it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and deodorizing properties.
Tips and Tricks with regards to making my 5 Best Diaper Rash Cream
- Sometimes the diaper rash cream you develop may become too thick (depends from recipe to recipe) and is not spreadable anymore. You can add few drops of coconut oil to soften it. Keep adding the oil till it reaches the required consistency.
- We have kept aside a set of utensils like sauce pan, spatulas, etc. for making all homemade diaper rash creams and other home made lotions and creams as the beeswax is very difficult to scrub off.
- Use the diaper rash creams/lotions in small quantities every time you change the diaper.
- All the 5 Best diaper rash recipes suggested are cloth diaper friendly as well.
- These homemade diaper rash creams can also be used as an all-purpose rash cream, it works great for healing many skin conditions.
Please Note: This is NOT a medical advice. These are suggestions we are giving based on our experience. It may or may not suit your needs. Researching on your own before implementing any treatment program will help you to treat your baby effectively. Make sure you monitor your baby for yeast infections or any other secondary infections in the diaper area. A patch test of the recipes should be performed before applying on the skin in the diaper region. It allows you to avoid any potential allergens that your baby may be affected with. Follow common guidelines for home treatment and contact your pediatrician if you are concerned about your child’s diaper rash.

Takeaway
While it’s inevitable that your baby will experience diaper rash at some point, you can greatly reduce the chances by giving your baby plenty of diaper-free time every day.
However, please note: Even after few days of using the homemade diaper rash creams or using natural remedies for diaper rash, if you do not see signs of improvement in that rash, please consult your pediatrician as some chronic rashes may need prescription drugs or ointments.
If you see any of these signs, fix an appointment with your pediatrician at the earliest:
- If the rash is severe or unusual
- If the rash gets worse despite home treatment
- If the rash bleeds, itches or oozes
- If it causes burning or pain with urination or a bowel movement for your kid

These 5 Best Diaper Rash Cream recipes – DIY really have worked wonders with my kids. But always remember to do a patch-test of the ingredients or the homemade diaper rash cream to ensure your baby is not allergic to it. You don’t want to make the problem worse. Once the home remedy for diaper rash passes the patch test, you can go ahead and use it on your baby’s bum.
